International Piano Competition 2009
The Fondazione Esperienze di Cultura Metropolitana of Settimo Torinese (Italy) organizes an International Piano Competition split in 2 main events; dedicated respectively to “Fiorina Sismondi ” and “Maria Golia“. The piano competition will be open for all nationalities. The competition will be held in Settimo Torinese from 15 till 17 May 2009 in the “Suoneria - Casa della musica” theater, via Partigiani, 4.
Terms and conditions
The sessions are public and are set up in the following groups:
a. Group I “Fiorina Sismondi Prize” , which is made up of the following categories:
- A, born in 1997 or later;
- B, born from 1993 to 1996;
- C, born from 1989 to 1992;
- D, born from 1985 to 1988.
b. Group II “Maria Golia Prize“
- No age limit.
Group I - “Fiorina Sismondi Prize” - CATEGORIES A, B, C, D:
Program and execution duration
The competition will be made of one single session with a program of the competitors choice:
- Pianists “A” : maximum duration : 8 minutes;
- Pianists “B”: maximum duration : 12 minutes;
- Pianists “C”: maximum duration : 15 minutes;
- Pianists “D”: maximum duration : 25 minutes;
The duration may only be exceeded in the case of the performance of one unique composition.
Prizes and awards
The scores, established by respective votes from the Judges, will be expressed in percentages. The scores will define the prizes and diplomas to be assigned according as follows:
- at least 95% : 1st Prize Certificate. Among those, the competitor that has obtained the highest score will receive the diploma for 1st Absolute Prize. It is not possible to split the 1st Absolute Prize.
- at least 90% : 2nd Prize Certificate
- at least 85% : 3rd Prize Certificate;
- at least 75% : Participation Award Certificate.
Prizes
The Jury Commission will assign the following prizes in money to the 1st absolute prizes for the following categories :
- Group A: €150,00 and medal
- Group B: €200,00 and medal
- Group C: €300,00 and medal
- Group D: €500,00 and medal
The contribution fee for the participation to the ”Fiorina Sismondi” prize is divided as follows :
- Category A : €30
- Category B : €35
- Category C : €40
- Category D : €45
Section II - “Maria Golia Prize”
Program contents and duration.
The competition is organized into two sessions : the elimination session and the final session.
Elimination session.
The session must last around 25 minutes and consist the execution of :
- A prelude and fugue from the “Well Tempered Klavier” books of J.S.Bach;
- The first movement of a Sonata of W.A. Mozart, F.J. Haydn or M. Clementi;
- One Etude of F. Chopin;
- One Etude of F. Liszt, A. Skrjabin, V. Liapunov, S. Rachmaninov, C. Debussy, Ligeti, or O’Hana.
- One composition chosen by the candidate.
Final Session
The Final Session will have a maximum duration of 40 minutes, and will consist in the execution of :
- One important Sonata from L.v. Beethoven;
- One important composition by F. Schubert, F. Mendelssohn, F. Chopin, R. Schumann, J. Brahms, C. Franck, F. Liszt, or M. Mussorgskij;
- One important composition by a composer born from 1861 (from C. Debussy) until the present time.
No piece of the Elimination session may be presented in the Final session.
Scoring
The admission to the Final Session will depend on judgement of suitability by the majority of the Jury.
The final ranking will be established as according to the votes given by members of the Jury, and will be expressed in percentages.
The First Absolute Prize will be assigned to the competitor that will obtain a total score of at least 95%. The First Absolute Prize can be awarded to only one competitor.
The Jury has the right to not assign any prize, should the competitors not meet the requirements stipulated in the competition’s rules.
A diploma will be assigned to all the non-winning participants of the Final Session.
Prizes
The Jury will assign the following prizes :
- First Prize : € 3.000,00 and three concerts.
- Second Prize : € 2.000,00 and one concert.
- Third Prize : € 1.000,00
- Special prizes and scholarship may be attributed at the Jury’s discretion.
The contribution fee for the participation to the ”Maria Golia” Prize amounts €70.
General Rules for the piano competition
The competitors are allowed to apply for a category that is initially intended for a greater age than their own.
Competitors that have parental or other close relations with any of the Jury members will not be allowed in the piano competition.
Competitors that have had private lessons from any of the Jury members in the past two years before the competition will not be allowed. If the didactic relation has been of a public nature, the competitor will be allowed, but the implied Jury member will not have the right to vote for that competitor.
How to apply:
The competitors must print and send their application form to the address below.
According to the law in Italy (Law 196/2003) it’s particularly important to sign the part authorizing the processing of their personal information.
All parts of the application form must be typed or handwritten in upper cases and printed on one side of the sheet only.
The participation fee is not reimbursable in case of abandon or absence, must bear the note “Participation fee Piano Competition” and must be wired to:

Docments to attach:
- Certificate with name and surname, birthdate, photo, Country of residence and Nationality.
- The program typed or hand written in uppercases on a separate sheet, with general information about the competitor, the choice of section and or category of appliance
- Receipt of wire transfer.

The artistic director has the induscutable right to exeptionnaly accept applications sent after the deadline.
Incomplete or invalid applications will not be considered.
Schedule of the International Piano competition
The times and schedule of the competition will be communicated via traditional mail to all participants after the deadline for the appliance.
- Pianists of the sections “A”,“B”,”C”,”D”:
The extraction of the first letter of the starting competitors name will be done before the start of each section audition, under supervision of the artistic director or a delegated person.
Competitors for the “Maria Golia” prize :
All competitors must present themselves at 6 PM of the 15 May 2009 in Via Partigiani 4. Settimo Torinese for the extraction of the letter and the here-after coming order of execution. This order will be kept for both sessions. The presence of the President of the Jury and the Artistic director or delegate(s) is required.
The competitors must present themselves with a valid Identity Document or Passport, and in case of minor age, the competitor must be accompanied by a parent or teacher.
Varia
Accomodation in proximity of the event
Together with the convocation mail sent to the competitors (see above), a list with the hotels with reduced price in the neighborhood of the event will be provided, but the competitors themselves are responsible for the booking of their accomodation.
Piano for study at disposal
At the start of the competition, a schedule for the use of study pianos will be announced. The schedule will be planned in a way to guarantee a fair distribution of the instruments.
The executions may be recorded and broadcasted by the organizators of the competition.
The winners of the first absolute prizes must play at the final concert of the winners that will be held on the 17 May 2009 in the Suoneria - Casa della musica, excuting a program chosen among the presented pieces by the Jury commision.
The winners will lose their right to receive the obtained prizes and concerts should they not participate in the Final concert.
The judgements expressed by the Jury Comission are not discussable, not changable and definitve.
The diploms that winners of absolute and special prizes will be handed over at the end of the Final concert.
Other diploms will be handed over during the proclamation of the winners, after the votation. Should that not be possible for justificable reasons, they will be sent by ordinary mail, upon his request and at the participants expensenses.
The organisators of the International Piano Competition has the right to change parts of these terms and to cancel categories if the number of participants should be too low.
If any other issue would not be covered in these terms, the Artistic Director will be the competent person to make a decision, as well as for any interpretative question about these terms.
The participation to the competition implies the uncondtional agreement of these terms.
For any eventual controversy, the place of competence will be Torino.
